Nice Book - Not Keen On the Ending

This is a pre-school book with a large format and great full page illustrations.

Jake the mouse is the fastest mouse in the world - and the one with the biggest ego! Jake teases other animals by saying how fast he is & how they won't catch him. The text is repeated for each animal making it easy for a child to join in with the storytelling. This is rather reminiscent of the Gingerbread man who boasts he can't be caught.

There are lessons to be learnt in this book about boasting and having too big an ego. Good lessons for children to learn early on in life.

I like the story and I like the illustrations but I don't like the ending. I am sure no adults reading this review will be devestated to know that the mouse gets eaten in the end - he gets his just deserts. However, many children would be quite upset by the ending which is quite sudden and abrupt. I know it is real life that cats catch mice but the ending was quite sudden and seemed rather brutal and nasty. After all the fun of Tom & Jerry is that even when Jerry gets caught he always escapes - poor old Tom never gets his mouse! I am sure the author could have come up with an ending where Jake gets bought down a peg or two but without the sudden and abrupt ending. Perhaps it could have been left with Jake in mouse's paw & then the child could imagine what might happen next.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
