A gripping and enjoyable read

I think that this may well be the best of the three (at present) Cormoran Strike novels. This story concentrates on Robin, his assistant, and her desire to become a detective and on events in Strike's earlier life which may have resulted in body parts being received at his office and attempts being made on their lives.

The author provides us with an excellent set of twists and turns in Robin's private life and her dealings with Strike as much as in the story. The two are becoming closer in a way that will need to be resolved soon - there is definitely unacknowledged sexual tension here ! The book is well paced and full of tension and I really enjoyed the whole story as well as the descriptions of London life - the author is particularly good at describing shabby pubs and their inhabitants.

Strike is dismissed by the police and generally disregarded but, of course, he is right and has to prove himself. This is not an original theme and to be honest nor is anything else in the book. The joy of this novel is its readability and the way in which you feel engaged with Strike and Robin and their quest for the truth. I particularly admire the way in which the author has written about a disabled character and how his disability limits Strike and the way he feels about it.

This is not a great puzzle and nor is it startlingly original but it is a great read and I was gripped from start to finish.
