This is a clever idea which doesn't quite work so the book is not as satisfying as it could be.

Amanda learns that her mother had died in the mental institution that had been her home since she killed Amanda's younger brother and tried to get Amanda to help her kill another one. The family had been part of a cult and its charismatic leader is just being released from prison. At the same time Amanda is at an important stage in trials at the lab where she works and is under pressure. When she visits the place where her mother lived she begins to suspect that the death may not have been suicide and that there is a lot going on that she doesn't understand. Then she begins getting threats ... As Amanda appears to be going mad and can't trust herself she has to find an ally but she doesn't know who she can trust.

In the end this is a romantic suspense novel and it is all about Amanda's situation. We are teased with the background in the cult but that is really not explored enough and nor is the situation with its leader Patrick. The book is more like a thriller where things happen to Amanda and the narrative remains with her and the story is about her reaction to things. If you don't expect more it is an enjoyable enough book but I don't think it uses its background and the potential it brings to the fullest extent.
