Very enjoyable

This enjoyable adventure fantasy novel is set in a pseudo-Medieval world. Magiere and her partner Leesil are con artists who cheat villages out of their money by pretending to be vampires and then by hunting down the imaginary and non-existent creatures and "killing" them. It isn't a very nice thing to do which didn't start the novel in an ideal way for me but soon the two are repenting of their way of life and taking their ill-gotten gains to own a tavern and live a better life (although I note that they don't return any of the money !). As it happens there are real vampires living in the town that they choose and they see the newcomers as a threat so Magiere and Leesil actually have to do some vampire hunting for real.

The book is the first in a series and you can tell that some of the themes will be developed further in teh future but it is a very satisfying read. Magiere struggles with a certain amount of guilt, unformed feelings for her partner and the fact that she is developing supernatural powers that she cannot explain. Leesil has had a difficult past and isn't quite sure what to do and his dog appears to be brighter than average. The book has more depth than many of these type of novels and some good characterisation.

In the end, however, this is a really good read. There is plenty of action moving the story along and it is all good fun. It really doesn't take itself too seriously but never falls into the trap of being silly
