Dark Horse (Jim Knighthorse Series #1) ()

Ironic/sarcastic narrator style

Hard-boiled crime fiction is so often based on the books of Raymond Chandler, narrated by a private detective full of clever remarks and a weary way of looking at the world. There are a lot of copies of this style around and this book is definitely influenced by that tradition. Although by no means an equal of Chandler it is certainly cleverly written, and witty and amusing in places. Our hero, Jim Knighth ...

What Katy Did ()

They don't write them like this any more ...

The four stars awarded to this review are mostly for nostalgia because this book reminded me of my childhood, when I devoured it, its sequels, and similar books ("Pollyanna", "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm", "Anne of Green Gables" and "Little Women" to name just a few). I am pretty sure that there is little in this story now to engage a teenage reader, especially one grounded in "Harry Potter", "Twilight" and ...

But I Said Forever (Parker Sisters Book 2) ()

More complex than chick lit

This is an engaging novel about what it might be like to live the dream. Brittany married Philip who has swept her off her feet. She lives in luxury with a nanny for her baby and as much money as she needs. What she does not have is any form of self-respect or the attention of her husband. In an effort to get herself out of the rut she takes a menial job at a local bakery because she has little experience ...

Death of a Spy (A Mark Sava Spy Novel Book 4) ()

Exciting and fast paced

This is the fourth book in this modern spy series by Dan Mayland and I think it may possibly be the best. You can certainly read this book without having read the previous three but I suggest that you treat yourself and start at the beginning with “The Colonel’s Mistake”. This book starts with a death in Georgia – the victim is Mark Sava’s old mentor when he was in the CIA. He is called to the sc ...

Daddy-Long-Legs ()

A book of its time

This is a book which has to be read in the firm knowledge that it was written at the beginning of the last century and that the emotions and actions contained within the book are those of that time although we might, perhaps, think of them in a different way and the book certainly wouldn't be written in this way today. Jerusha lives in an orphanage where her main role is to look after the smaller children. ...

Murder at the Book Fair (Book 8 Dekker Cozy Mystery Series) ()

Another winner from Demaree

An excellent murder-mystery with all the ingredients I have come to expect from Steve Demaree.  I thoroughly enjoy this series of books and am happily working my way through all of them.  Each one follows a similar format and you know what to expect when you settle down to read them.  The quirkiness of having police detectives who receive a daily word from God to help them solve the murders adds an unusu ...

52 Steps to Murder (Book 1 Dekker Cozy Mystery Series) ()

A brilliant cosy mystery

I have decided that my next few kindle books will be the complete (to date) cosy mystery series written by Steve Demaree and starring Cy Dekker and Lou Murdoch as the 2 main detectives.  There are 1o books in the series, and I had read 4 in the past, not always in order,  so now I will read all 10 in the correct order.  If I haven't already reviewed them, I will write a review as I finish them.   52 St ...

Murder on a Blind Date (Book 9 Dekker Cozy Mystery Series) ()

Another winner from Steve Demaree

I have to confess to being a huge Steve Demaree fan - if you've seen some of my previous reviews, you might already be aware of this.  I have yet to read one of his books that I didn't enjoy - although some are better than others.  Murder on a Blind Date is one of the better ones.  Demaree returns to the humour of earlier books.  The plot is enjoyable and the characters, as always, are well-written.  T ...

A Body on the Porch (Book 10 Dekker Cozy Mystery Series) ()

A funny cosy mystery

A Body on the Porch is the 10th book in the Cy Dekker cosy mystery series written by Steve Demaree.  It is a well-written book with great characters, lots of humour (including a couple of laugh out loud moments) and a fun plot.  It also contains a warning about making rash promises, that you may find you have to fulfil ;).  I thoroughly enjoy these books and would heartily recommend them to fans of cosy ...

Murder in the Dark (Book 1 Off the Beaten Path Mystery Series) ()

A different style to his usual books

Having read all of the Cy Dekker mysteries, I decided to try a different one by the same author.  I was glad I did.  Murder in the Dark has less humour than the Dekker books - but there are still snatches of humour throughout - and the characters are darker than previous books, but this is still a good read.  The plot is dramatic and moves at a steady pace.  The characters are well-written and the novel ...

A fantastic murder mystery

Two Bodies in the Backyard is the 11th book in the Cy Dekker and Lou Murdock cosy mysteries by Steve Demaree. I am an unashamed fan of this series - and others written by the same author - and this is one of the best so far.  It contains a lot of humour in the opening chapters and then settles down into a series murder mystery.  As always with Demaree's books, you get a good plot with well-written charact ...

White Trash Gothic ()

Trash is the operative word here

I once read a review of 50 Shades of Grey which I can paraphrase as "I love this book because it convinces me I could write a better one.". That's how I feel about this book except that there is really nothing to love about it. It classes itself as Extreme Horror but to me the word horror means something that scares me or unsettles me and stays in my thoughts for a long time after I stop reading. To my defi ...
