FBI agent Smoky Barrett is no stranger to the darker recesses of the human mind. But nothing could have prepared her for the day she had to watch her husband and daughter die at the hands of a serial killer. She bears the scars, mental and physical.

Most people would run - from work, from life, from everything associated with the pain of a shattered existence. But Smoky doesn't know how to run - and when the job that has defined her life comes calling once again with the news that her best friend from high school has been brutally murdered, she finds herself back in the firing line, chasing a hidden killer who will stop at nothing to confront her.

Face to face.

An exciting and gripping read

This book is definitely at the gorier end of suspense/crime writing and the author enjoys shocking the reader by thinking of more and more shocking things to happen to his characters, both physically and psychologically. I have to say that I find a lot of it rather unbelievable (are all serial killers really so clever, manipulative and focussed ?) but this is a gripping read from the beginning and if you go with the story you will find yourself greatly entertained.

Smoky is an FBI agent who is returning to work as an investigator of serial killers after one has invaded her home and her family have been murdered. She is marked by horrific scars on her face which were inflicted by the killer and is still having therapy but despite the fact that she is in recovery she is called in to be part of a new investigation because the killer seems to have committed a crime to drawn Smoky's attention to it. The dead woman is a friend of Smoky's and her young daughter has been tied to the body of her dead mother and left until she has been found. Smoky takes over the investigation and the daughter but the killer is determined to have an effect on Smoky and all her FBI team.

This is an enjoyable read despite the subject matter. The author creates some excellent characters and then we watch them struggle through adversity. As I said, it is unbelievable in places and the experienced crime reader will spot what is going on and who the perpetrator must be quite quickly but the sheer readability of the book and the action filled plot kept me hooked to the end.
